It’s official, our furry little friend in Punxsutawney has predicted 6-more weeks of harsh Pittsburgh winter. Unfortunately, it’s not quite time to pack away women’s clothes like the ski coats and wool mittens.

Throughout winter, remaining fashionable can feel like a full-time job, as we struggle to strike that perfect balance between cozy and stylish with our clothing choices. It’s not that we hate winter, we just hate limiting ourselves to the season’s bulky fashion. Not only does it fail to flatter most figures, it’s almost impossible for your personal style to shine through. Almost. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of a few fashion-friendly trends to help ease the pain of those inevitable winter blues.

Cling to pieces that are seasonally universal. Jeans and leggings are common sense clothing choices, no matter what the season. When paired with a more modish element, they can effortlessly transform a functional fit into a flattering one. Think about it: in the midst of 80 degree days (we miss you!), a low-key blouse or popular bandeau is a no-brainer. In comes the subzero temperatures and suddenly looking top-notch takes a backseat. One of the best recommendations that we can give to anyone struggling with melding seasonal pieces is to master layering techniques. You will want to choose a clever choice of clothing tiers, such as combining a formfitting find with a more flowy, eye-catching top layer. This resourceful trick provides endless flexibility in a wardrobe, and may also keep you on-trend without freezing to death. It’s painful to be beautiful, but that pain doesn’t need to include frostbite.

Materials make the woman. Yes, it’s important to pay attention to what you’re putting in your body, but why not focus on what goes on it as well? Designers select materials for a myriad of reasons: appearance, fit, comfort, cost and even practicality. Satin and lace serve as a sensible option for those who live in climates that afford them the luxury of avoiding a snowy season. Contrarily, for women more in need of winter-wear, seasonally-versatile materials such as cashmere, fleece, or a bamboo/cotton combo make up most of the market. These fabrics are able to insulate warmth, while also maintaining a fashion-forward polish. We’re likely all in agreement that we’d rather be sipping margaritas in a beach-worthy bikini, but many winter wardrobe choices provide a pretty cozy alternative.

Make a fashion statement. You get a necklace, you get a necklace, you get a necklace! (Okay, that’s enough of the Oprah re-runs for one day.) Sometimes, a simplistic winter outfit can be made into an ensemble deemed fit for the fashion runway… with a few add-ons, that is. We’ve all heard the age-old adage that diamonds are girl’s best friend. Well, we’re not here to play favorites. Hand us a chunky bracelet, bold earrings, or a statement necklace, and suddenly a t-shirt is now chic enough for a girl’s night on the town. Speaking of statement pieces, no one said jewelry is the only way to stand out. Next time you’re in a fashion-bind, try throwing on an up-to-the-minute belt, such as the classic Leather Cumberbund Belt featured as a part of our clothing line.

Number of ways to wear a scarf: endless. Last but not least, we’re going to hit you with one of the most common winter style trends known to northerners. The art of scarf wrapping is surely worth marveling at. Now comes the difficult part – choosing one! You may have noticed that there are nearly infinity options when it comes to scarves. Some of our favorites include: infinity scarves, square scarves, rectangle scarves, wrap scarves, and bandana scarves, just to name a few. The simplest thing to do, that will still result in fierce outfitting, is finding a basic scarf that can complement your overall physique and style. And that’s a wrap.

Winter may not be your favorite season, but that doesn’t give you the go-ahead to lounge around in sweats every day until it’s over. There’s no reason to sacrifice fashion for comfort. If all else fails, we won’t judge if you opt to keep from venturing outside. Stay indoors, enjoy the warmth, and shop designs by Kiya Tomlin from the comfort of your couch.
